Hatred is a funny thing. 'Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi' is quite possibly the most divisive movie ever made, and what makes matters worse is that it belongs to one of the most beloved film series of all time. Going into this film, I found it very low that mostly every fan who disliked 'The Last Jedi' had their opinions on this film set, prior to even seeing it. I must admit that I am not the biggest fan of 'The Last Jedi' either, yet still appreciate it as a unique and often beautifully shot addition to the Skywalker Saga. Its last 40 minutes are astounding. 'The Force Awakens' played it too safe of course, following a few too many plot threads similar to that of 'A New Hope' yet in so doing captured a spirit and essence of this series, the likes of which hadn't been seen since 'Return Of The Jedi. It was well written, well acted and well executed, and how someone can objectively argue that the disappointing Prequel Trilogy comes close to 'The Force Awakens' baffles me.
Now we get to 'Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise Of Skywalker' the best, most satisfying, most emotional, most resonant Star Wars movie of all time. I had been anticipating this movie like no other movie in my lifetime. I do not know why, but there was something grand about its very aura. I remember staying up until 3am to see its Teaser Trailer debut live, and cried when the title was revealed with that masterful and dramatic music by John Williams.
'The Rise Of Skywalker' begins abruptly, following Kylo Ren's frenzied quest to find Palpatine, following the best written opening crawl to a Star Wars movie. Immediately you get the sense that this is the last Star Wars movie, whether it be by focusing on the Sequel Trilogy's most compelling character in a visually striking way, or in the sequence's hasty pace. If you felt that the opening was rushed, you're rightly gonna get left behind. It kicks you into the story without fuss, and while it would've been wise to address how Palpatine actually survived the events of 'Return Of The Jedi' I appreciate that the audience can fill in the blanks for themselves. Either way, Ian McDiarmid is back as 'The Emperor' and every "fan" seems to be taking this for granted. He has the same presence and energy as he had in 'Return Of The Jedi' and 'Revenge Of The Sith' although, Revenge Of The Sith' is still his highlight.
The often humorous dynamic between Finn, Poe and Rey is very natural and fun to watch, and you buy that they've become friends even if this film marks their first onscreen adventure together. Nothing feels forced, and their collective chemistry is at times near perfect. Billy Dee Williams somehow brings Lando Calrissian back, as if he'd never left, and it's a joy to witness his return. J.J Abrams was correct in his statements during interviews; Carrie Fisher (Leia) is IN the movie. Truthfully, it feels seamless, and her death scene is touching. She taps into Kylo Ren's inner goodness during a Lightsaber Duel with Rey on the wreckage of the Second Death Star. It's a reverent image; these new generations of both Skywalker and Palpatine fighting on the remains of a battle station they weren't even born before. The absence of music, instead replaced by the crashing of waves and the energy of Rey and Kylo's Force Leaps makes it one of the best Lightsaber Duels in the Saga. Han Solo's appearance will make you cry, and just when you thought 'The Force Awakens' was his last Star Wars film, this one goes one step better. "Hey Kid. As the camera pans around to face him; you're overcome with emotions. This puts further emphasis on J.J Abrams' directing talents. The whole movie is beautiful to look at, compliments of a unique blueish palette, and in particular the wide shot of a thoughtful Ben Solo standing on the edge of a piece of Death Star wreckage is flawless.
The story of this film feels bold and fresh. I especially liked the cultish undertones of the Sith. Fan service is a common critique of this film, yet I struggle to understand why you shouldn't incorporate feelings of nostalgia in the last movie of a series to which it belongs. By this logic, Rey sliding down a sand hill at Skywalker Ranch in this movie, just like she slides down a sand hill from a crashed Star Destroyer in 'The Force Awakens' is supposedly fan service. No, it's called story telling. Trilogy cappers in any regard must have numerous callbacks to their predecessors. Luke pulling up the X-Wing from the water will make you cry here, and to call it nostalgia is to call yourself an idiot. Again, it's story telling, and brings an arc from 'The Empire Strikes Back' full circle. Why? Because it's part of the same series.
Kylo Ren's redemption is so well done, and man oh man when he and Rey ignite their blue Lightsabers to take on the Sith Warriors together; I couldn't help but smile from ear to ear. "Go, Kid" I thought aloud. Rey and Kylo end up kissing in a very effective payoff. There's so much tension building over two movies, and then finally! Perhaps I'll use that specific moment as a metaphor for the entire movie. It's a payoff in every sense of the word. It gives you everything you could possibly want and more, since that kiss goes on for a while. The voices of the Force Ghosts giving Rey the strength to fight Palpatine is another successful and ultimately satisfying moment. "I am every Jedi. Yeah you are, baby.
She buries Leia's Lightsaber along with Luke's at the Skywalker Homestead in a brilliant piece of writing by J.J Abrams, only to then ignite her own, yellow hued Lightsaber. The closing frame of this movie perfectly illustrates the point of the Sequel Trilogy, there's the old (the setting Twin Suns) along with the new (Rey and BB-8) in its foreground. Family; what legacies are inherited or not inherited, how either good or evil will prevail for one final battle, the story of a new generation having to deal with the immense histories which preceded them. It's beautiful.
I could go on and on about further subtleties that make this movie as good as it is. Kylo's reaction to Chewie's supposed "death" for instance. General Hux being given an abrupt yet fitting send off. Richard E. Grant's threatening Allegiant General Pryde. The action in general being a thrill to watch. I don't know what to say, I genuinely loved everything about this movie, and what J.J Abrams has done, is created a faultless farewell.
This is and will always be the only ending to the Skywalker Saga. Poetic, hard-hitting and undeniably grand, Episode IX becomes the very best of the nine-part narrative, and possibly the highest, most cathartic franchise concluding movie in general. 'Once Upon A Time. In Hollywood' and 'The Rise Of Skywalker' for the win for 2019.
